Subject: End the bombing of Yugoslavia
To: Prime Minister Jean Chretien:
Subject: End the bombing of Yugoslavia.
I am a very concerned Canadian citizen. For the past week,
I have tried to understand why my country is at war for the first
time in my lifetime,
and without even a debate in
Parliament. This is what I see.
The NATO attacks on Yugoslavia have had several predictable
results:
- - The overnight rout of all internal liberal opposition
to Milosevic, and a concomitant strengthening of his
position in Yugoslavia.
- -The departure from Kosovo of all humanitarian and human
rights organizations, as well as Western reporters.
- - An inflaming of already-boiling nationalist sentiments,
now fortified by anger and terror.
War's usual and expected accompaniment of lies, "disinformation",
mindless patriotism, terror and confusion give cover to thugs of
all colours: Serbian paramilitary units, Albanian KLA terrorists,
criminal opportunists, and others yet to come.
As a direct result of the actions of Canada and NATO:
- - More civilians are dying. Daily Serbian civilian
casualties now likely exceed the rate of Albanian
casualties before the attack began. And no one has any
way to know how many more Albanians are dying than before.
- - Kosovar Albanians are being forced from their homes at
dramatically increased rates. Neighbouring
countries are being overwhelmed.
- - Yugoslavia will be further demoralized and
impoverished, making life worse for all ethnic groups,
for years after the bombs have stopped killing.
- - The possibility of peaceful coexistence in the Balkans
has been even further eroded. Attempting to force
upon Kosovo, a political arrangement that neither side
would accept, NATO is unlikely to achieve a result it
would want.
- - There is evidence that depleted uranium from exploded
NATO ordnance may endanger the lives of the next
generation in Yugoslavia: environmental
contaminants will injure or kill Serbian and Albanian
children without discrimination.
Mr. Chretien, you do not have the support of all Canadians in
this venture. Church leaders, columnists and a few courageous
politicians have criticized the NATO attacks. Around the
world, NATO has many more reasoned and horrified critics. (You
can see a sampling of them at < http://www.antiwar.com >.) [And
below, editor's note.]
More dangers lie ahead of us:
- - A prolonged conflict, with heavy losses on both sides:
history predicts, and the evidence is mounting, that NATO
will be drawn into a bloody ground war in the mountainous
regions of Yugoslavia.
- - Escalation of the conflict: NATO has stated that
this action is necessary to prevent the spread of war.
Adding the first dozen nations to the war was NATO's
doing. Now, we risk the intervention by both Russia
and then Moslem nations, possibly leading to further
wars along Russia's borders.
- - Copycat crimes: both terrorists and
interventionist nations will be emboldened by this
precedent to attack their enemies in the name of peace.
There are dozens of hotspots around the world that could
be ignited. Will our soldiers be fighting in all of
them?
I used to believe that the Canadian government was given to
more reasoned and moral approaches than bombing a country's
citizens to liberate them from a dictator. Our voice for
peace in world conflicts has been sadly diminished. Perhaps
there are no perfect answers. There were, and are, better
courses of action than the blood-stained one you have embarked us
upon. End Canada's involvement and the NATO attacks now!

from the Prime Minister's Office here.]
And here's my thinking 3 months later. War on Yugoslavia: a personal Odyssey
"Clinton gave three reasons for his
military intervention in the heart of Europe. A quick look shows
them to be models of the state disinformation we've come to
expect in wartime.
First, he says he is dropping bombs to prevent
the spread of war. But this is straight out of Orwell. Escalating
war does not prevent its spread. It encourages it. It brings
about more property destruction, suffering, and death. It
inflames tempers, entrenches positions, sows indelible hatreds,
and draws others into long-lasting conflicts.
Second, he says he wants to curb the ability of
Milosevic to build up his defenses and enforce Serbian
territorial claims. This line was copyright at the beginning of
the ten-year war on Iraq. Substitute the name Saddam and it's a
perfect fit. This policy plays right into the hands of the
respective country's leader, making him more popular than ever
and unifying the people against the foreign aggressor.
Incidentally, how many days before we hear that Serbia is
building "weapons of mass destruction"?
Third, Clinton says he wants to underscore the
credibility of Nato. The truth is that Nato has had no
credibility since the collapse of the Cold War took away its
official reason for existence. The entire world now sees this
organization for what it is: a fig-leaf for US imperialism. Nato
has become a threat to peace in Europe because the US believes
Nato must fight wars to preserve US hegemony." (from "The Lies
of War" by Llewellyn H.Rockwell,
Jr. at the Mises
Institute.)
